Border Microphone: The ideal solution for stage, stage and studio
A boundary microphone (also called a Boundary Microphone or PZM) is a unique type of microphone specifically designed to make optimal use of reflections on flat surfaces. Thanks to this design, boundary microphones deliver a higher output signal and very natural sound reproduction, making them indispensable in both professional audio recording and live recording on stage.
How does the technique behind the Boundary Effect work?
When a microphone capsule is placed very close to a flat surface (such as a floor, wall or table), the sound is perceived louder. This is because the microphone picks up the sound in two ways at the same time: directly and via the reflection of the surface. A high-pressure area of sound is created in this 'pressure zone'.
In practice, this results in a significant quality improvement:
- Higher Gain: A theoretical increase in signal up to 6 dB.
- Better Signal-to-Noise Ratio: An improvement of +3 to +6 dB compared to standard microphones.
- Phase correction: Because the reflection and the direct sound arrive simultaneously, you are not bothered by comb filter effects.
Versatile applications of the boundary microphone
Due to their unobtrusive design and wide characteristic, boundary microphones can be used for various professional purposes:
- Meetings and Conferences: Perfect for recording all attendees around a table with maximum speech intelligibility.
- Stage and Theatre: Placed discreetly on the stage floor to accommodate the actors without tripods in view.
- Studio recordings (Drums): Often placed in the kick drum because of its excellent bass response and fast attack.
- Ambient sound: Ideal for capturing the natural 'room ambience' in a recording studio.

Boundary Microphone Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
- Should I always place a boundary microphone on a flat surface?
Yes, a hard, flat surface is essential for best performance. The larger the surface (for example a large table or a wooden floor), the better the reproduction of the low frequencies will be.
- Does a boundary microphone require phantom power?
Most professional boundary microphones are condenser microphones and therefore require phantom power (+48V) from your mixing console or audio interface to function.
- Is a boundary microphone suitable for vocals?
A broadcast or vocal microphone is usually better suited for individual singing. However, for group singing or choirs on stage, a boundary microphone on the floor can be an excellent way to capture the entire sound without blocking the audience's view.
